From Bangladesh, with love, to Oxford.

My story

I am Affnafee Rahman. I graduated from the University of Oxford in 2020 with an MEng in Engineering Science. I was born and raised in Bangladesh where I also did my A Levels. I achieved World's Highest in A level Further Maths along with A*s in Maths, Physics & Chemistry. I was also the only international student from Bangladesh at Oxford in Cohort 2016 across all undergraduate programs.

My tutoring experience

I have an incredibly decorated CV both as a student and a tutor. I have tutored for reputable platforms such as UniAdmissions & PMT and garnered undeniable praise and admiration from students. On PMT, I have amassed over 800 hours of 1-2-1 tuition just over the last two years with a perfect 5-stars rating.  

Students from all academic levels have come to me and left with huge improvements. For example, I have taken students with a predicted grade of E to a final grade of B. Others have come with predicted A’s and left with A*’s.

My tutoring background goes as far back as when I was an undergraduate student at Oxford. In fact, even when I was in school in Bangladesh, I remember my friends used to come to me for help if they didn’t understand topics in Physics, Maths or Chemistry, and I used to help them with passion and a lot of heart. This is where my foundational understanding of STEM subjects was built. This allowed me to think out loud, present my critical thinking in ways my friends would understand.

Little did I know that years later those very fundamental skills would allow me to nail my Oxford interview, become an engineer and pave the pathway in becoming one of the very best tutors in the world, reshape my students’ thinking and leave a lasting impact in every individual’s life who comes to me for help.

Why I chose full-time tutoring over a career in industry.

Since I graduated from Oxford, I have worked as a full-time mechanical engineer in the nuclear power industry for world-renowned organizations such as AtkinsRéalis, Rolls Royce and EDF Energy. Whilst I enjoyed the dense technical aspects of these roles, it was hard for me to see the direct positive effect I was having on someone’s personal growth and journey.

I was still tutoring part-time, and I enjoyed it far more than I ever did doing some seismic FE analysis of a nuclear island of an SMR.

After some soul-searching, I concluded that tutoring and mentoring students is what I enjoy the most and what I would be willing to do for life! And this takes me back to my roots. Back to the days when I was explaining a Physics or a Maths problem to one of my friends at school. I am left wondering: Life really has come full circle!

Driven by unrelenting passion, indomitable desire and a sincere love for learning, I left Bangladesh for Oxford. It is the very same ambition, commitment and energy I bring to each and every single lesson I teach.

When my students attain their A*s, A’s and predicted grades or land offers from their dream universities, I am left with the exact same feeling of joy, accomplishment and awe I felt on the 5th of January 2016 when I opened my acceptance letter from Oxford! This is a feeling I can never truly put into words.
